Subject: Is this FBI e-mail legit?
Hi, I requested a background check in June and sent it in with a personal check (oops!). I just got this email from mih@leo.gov, but I want to know if it is legitmate before i fax them my credit card info... Thanks for any input.

We have received your record request. However, you have sent us a personal check and our regulations do not allow us to accept personal or business checks for payment.

We must have a money order or certified bank check in the amount of 18 US Dollars made payable to the US Treasury. We can hold this request until you can send that to us using the address listed below. We would return the unused check with the results of your request. Or, we can return your request for completion.

We have just begun to accept credit card payment. I am attaching the necessary forms and directions to this email. If you wish to pay in this way, you can fax the required information to us using the fax number listed below. Please send to ATTN: Patty.

Please advise us by return email how you wish us to proceed.

We will hold your request for two business days. If we do not hear from you by return email in that length of time, we will return it for completion.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely,

Linda

I would call them and verify. I would also put a stop payment on the cheque.

Its a fraud - leo.gov does not exist. You should call the US FBI at a number from directory assistance.

Above poster is wrong. mih@leo.gov is absolutely legitimate.
I faxed them my credit card info to expedite my fingerprint check. Everything went well and got results fine. Usually anything with .gov is legit. leo stands for law enforcement office, or the FBI.

You do not need the expense and trouble of doing a stop payment on your check. The FBI will either send it back or destroy it.

My oh my, what bad advice on this topic.

sometimes it is as easy as googling leo.gov to see what comes up.

I would still recommend a stop payment on the cheque. I hate paying people twice for the same thing and a stop payment costs $5?

The FBI are not just "people". By law, government agencies cannot defraud or overbill. If anyone, one need not worry about the FBI trying to get paid twice - stop payment is really unnecessary.

I am not concerned about fraud, I am concerned about stupidity.

I did send them 1 money order for $18 for 2 applications (my bad) and they returned the whole packet after 2 months with a letter and form that I am missing 1 more payment so I filled that form with my credit card info and sent it back. They never emailed me.

leo.gov is legit (in reply to: Is this FBI e-mail legit?)
´Law Enforcement Online´ (LEO) is a secure portal set up by the FBI. Membership is open to members of law enforcement that have been verified by the FBI as such. Members receive an email address at user@leo.gov. So, I would feel safe in assuming that the email you received is legitimate.

Fingerprint Copies (in reply to: Is this FBI e-mail legit?)
I do not know if this is the proper office to sent this request to, but hoping that it is! I am applying for Permanent Residency in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada, as I married a Canadian resident that lives here. I have my local and State Police Fingerprint copies, but need copies from your office. I retired from the United States Army on 1 August 1993 with 22 years of active service at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO. I was born in Prairie Grove, Ark, on July 14th, 1952, so you know I am a US citizen. My SSN is "324-48-7025" Please respond as soon as possible and let me know if I have contacted the right office and what you will need from me to complete this request!
Thank You!
