Subject: How to cancel a car imported to Canada ?
  Hi,
I enetered into canada as a landed immigrant in August,2006. I just landed to stay few days in Canada apply for my PR and then drive back to US and stay for one more year.

I filled up GOODs to follow list, but by mistake imported the my Car. I should have put that in the goods to follow list. Now I am getting notifications from RIV to certify the vehicle.

How do I cancel the import now and re-do the same at a latter date ?

With regards,
Debajyoti

Yes, should have put car on "Goods to Follow" list rather than importing then. I have a feeling there´s no easy way out of that, other than exporting it back to U.S., and you don´t want to do that.

If I were you I´d make another quick visit, and certify and license the car for Canadian standards and finish the required paperwork. Then drive back to U.S. as usual. The only problem with that scenario is you may need to provide a Canadian address if you don´t have one yet. You could use your PR Card forwarding address.

you can scrape the car if it is old.

Thank you a lot !!!The car is kind of new 2001 model.I want to keep the Car.

I can make a quick visit and certify the car there. But what will happen to my US licence plate...Do I loose US registration if I certify the Car as Canadian car.

Can I drive the same car here in US..What about Car Insurance and registration...

Please update me...

Yes, you would need to license the car with the provice you´re registering it in. That means provincial license plates. You can then drive to the U.S. without problem, since you´re now a Canadian visitor to the U.S from your car´s perspective. I´m not sure, though, if there is a maximum time that you can keeep your Canadian registered car in the U.S. - you´d have to check on that.

Wouln´d be easier that you told them you never brought the car to Canada?
I included my cars on the day a landed at the airport, from Mexico, and a couple of months later, when the moving truck arrived via Niagara with all my stuff, the officer asked about the cars (because they were on the list) and we just told them that we weren´t going to import them, and no problem.

Good luck

I just called the call center of RIV (Registrar of Imported Vehicles-1888-848-8240). I explained the situation as I filled the import form at the port, got it in the system and the drove back the car to US after a week. After that I did not return to Canada and donot intend for another year or so.

She replied, I can send a notorized letter to RIV Canada saying I have exported the car back to US and they will close the case. But I still have to pay the registration fees of $206.

Looks like a solution to me.Lets see how it works ?

any thoughts ???
