Subject: USA to Canada reasons
I guess am in mood to chat. I´m wondering about those (like me) who are U.S. citizens and immigrating (or tring to) to Canada. The big question is WHY?

As my friends tell me (who look at me suspiciouly after informing them of my Canada plans), the U.S. already has everything you could possibly want. Good jobs, goods, consumer items, scenery, warm weather, diversity, freedom, choices, etc. They also warn me that everything is "so expensive in Canada".

I have specific reasons (social, cultural, and political), but I´m wondering if anyone in same situation would care to share their reasons?

Hi Ricahard, would it be possible for you to elaborate
a little on the personal reasons you have that lead you to the path to immigrate to Canada ?

Brian

Hi Brian,

Thanks for asking. I will elaborate on my reasons, but was hoping to hear first from others in same situation without influncing what they had to say. How about you - in same situation and could you elaborate on your reasons if so?

have a look at my post about Harper and immigration.

I suspect you are being talked at by people who think they live in the center of the universe. Americans are notorious for being ignorant of the world around them.

I am sure there are other great places in this world to live other than Canada, but balancing the weather, what it costs to live here, our salaries, our political and religious freedom, our multicultural mentality, our foreign policy, our education, our healthcare... you could not convince me to live anywhere else.

Center of the universe - absolutely not. A lovely place to live your life - you bet.

For me there are a number of generally left-leaning reasons. I don´t think one´s health care should be determined by one´s ability to pay for it. I don´t think governments, whether state or federal, should be in the business of executing people. I will be able to marry my same-sex partner there (at least for now) and adopt children. I´m also not a fan of the Iraq war and the general attitude of ´might makes right´ that I percieve on the part of the US. That´s probably enough for now. :-)

I am not from or in U.S. I am in eastern Europe.
Even though it´s not my opinion needed, i´d still want to say mine. My reason to immigrate is:
1. Safety. All I dream of is to have a place I can stroll with my wife without looking back for skinheads, or an offensive word following!
2. I just wanna live and let live and don´t care if it will take ten years to get to the position to get a good job! I will learn, all can learn!
3. I wish you now what it feels like to be staying home at the slightest sign of sickness cos you cannot afford a good healthcare! I haven´t been sick more than a headache but there´s constant fear of the fact that a simple appendix operation can get me loosing a my savings say to come to Canada in less than a year!

these are just a few. I can go on if interested. ant thanx for hearing my cry. cannot afford a shrink (just kidding).

My family has applied to immigrate from the USA for many of the above mentioned reasons. The political climate seems more suited to our tastes, the Canadian healthcare system with all of its faults is better than what is in store for my two children when they reach adulthood, Canada is more open to differences than America (generally), I question our ability to pay for our chidlren´s higher education compared to Canadian university costs, Hockey, beer, more environmental awareness, multi-party political system, stronger unions, multi-lingual (I speak fluent French, but a native American English speaker), richer culture, better job security for my wife, etc., etc., etc.

Anything upon which you wish for me to elaborate?

Hi Richard,

I am in the US for many years now, currently on work permit, my job is somewhat stable. The GC is in process, all was well but suddenly the priority dates were pushed back. This means it will take me another 3-4 years to get the US green card. Do I want to continue working in the same company, for the same boss etc. and not have choices ? I refuse to live without choices for another prime-four-years of my life, so decided to move to Canada. I might not make as much money I make in the US, but I have good savings and life is what matters the most; I treasure myself.

I´m American, but (because of a job) came here about 9 years ago. My original intent was to get some experience, then go back for the big $$ in my field. I hadn´t anticipated that I´d fall in love with Canada, while at the same time become more discouraged day-by-day with what´s going on in the US.

Health care is part of of; so is fundamental tolerance of all sorts of folks. If you really want to study the difference in attitudes, I highly recommend "Fire and Ice" by Michael Adams. It´s eye-opening, and explains a bunch.
