Armed with degrees, they drive our cabs

Thousands of professionals have been lured to Canadian cities like London with promises of lucrative careers and a prosperous, secure future in a new land. Once they get here, the reality is sobering. And dream-shattering.

I very much doubt that CIC makes any work-related promises or offers whatsoever. But then again, what is wrong with being a cab driver? Remember that work ennobles humans... gives them dignity, self-confidence, improves their stature and provides good health and food! If someone is truly resourceful, he would probably do odd jobs for the time being.... Canada doesn´t appear to be a trap of any kind. So if someone is fully dissatisfied, there must be a return path to their source country, true?

Suing Ottawa

One couple in Alberta is determined to take on Canada´s failing immigration system. Prem and Nessa Premakumaran are suing the federal government, accusing Canada of wooing professionals like themselves under false pretences.

Now living in Edmonton, Prem and Nessa were educated in the United Kingdom and worked for 20 years in London, England, in accounting and office administration before emigrating to Canada.

They claim that during their interview at the Canadian High Commission they were told they would have no trouble finding work in their fields given their experience and qualifications. Today, they complain, that they were sold a bill of goods.

"If they are looking for slaves to do the jobs, menial jobs, they should advertise they are looking, Canada is looking for slaves to do the menial jobs," complains Prem.

Since coming to Canada, it´s been a constant struggle for Prem and Nessa to support their young family. In spite of their global experience and a booming Alberta economy, no one would hire them.

Instead of working in finance and office administration, the Premakumarans have been forced to take whatever jobs they could get to survive, cleaning hotel rooms and offices.

At one point Prem was even forced to shovel snow in front of Canada Place to make ends meet.

For sure nothing wrong in driving cabs for a living...but... Canada should lure Cab drivers from all over the world to immigrate and not professionals and make them lead a life of poverty.

Well mister you don´t need to change your handle so quick! Your IP is still the same. But I am aware of those Indians from Britain and their case. I am sure they cannot force a court decide a case like this. They are fundamentally wrong to demand that Canada seek out illiterate immigrants. Education is supposed to open the mind and make people resourceful, not resentful. Once they arrived here with their lackluster skills, they discovered that it is not as easy to settle here. They could as well show up here BEFORE immigrating and live a year or so and explore the job market to convince themselves about the real situation. Many other aspiring immigrants from third world can not do this. However, being from Britain, they had full access to Canada. But then again, why did they give up on their careers, if they had productive life in Britain. By taking a chance, and probably hoping for bigger better greener pastures, they plunged into the new world and got shot down early. But then I bet their attitudes and other aspects showed up too close to surface and further hindered their chances at success. Anyone would tell you that you will succeed in a new country if you show them legitimate education.... this encouragement presupposes a flexible mindset, resourcefulness, creativity and tenacity, which are all expected from a well educated person. Snotty face gets slammed into wall in the new world... so modesty might help out a lil where snobbery won´t! Rest that case. It was already heard by courts and dismissed... I am sure they got more dough to spend on lawyers so probably they keep appealing but here this: there is no way a court can enforce hearsay... that´s what their case about promises boils down to! Stop this crap and let these people worry about specific immigration problems.

If you don´t like to drive cabs in Canada then you are more than welcome to come to New Zealand and be a supermarket nightfiller (with a bit of luck) -degree in any discipline is a MUST for this job...or you can be a care-giver (real shortages in this area)
Take the bright side, try harder and one day you will succeed...
If you go back to your home country do you think you can get a job on the spot? I doubt it...

human nature is always trying to blame someone for their fault leads to your own bad experience.
This is same as marriage, date, work, immigration.
Why not try to change yourself and expect society to change in order to serve you???
Why not change yourself, why you blame your girlfriend always bitches!!!!!!

And I hate people always bring out stuff like racial profie or discrimination.
I am an Asian, because I work hard and smart, I get used to the life here, I make close to average Canadian income, there is no such thing call discrimination to me.

Bankers, brokers are more than willing to discuss any problem with me rather than you ask them if they will treat you different because you are visable minority.

Tell you one thing, if you wanna be proud, worthship money, money is power in western society.

I have sympathy with you. We need to work hard and smart in this country to get ahead. The culture and systems are different in this country. We all find that. We made this country our own, we need to strat at ground floor and work upward. I have met and seen and have so many friends who made it to the top.
I know top Doctor who are Indians and won order of Canada award, I know top Indian politicians who became Minister in Canadian Govt, I know top Indian researcher who won many awards in Canada.

Please do not loose hope, use your current job as stepping stone , it is ok if it a taxi driver´s job.
Please explore the following;
-explore to go in to your own business--Canadian Govt and Alberta Govt has many program to help the small businesses.
-explore teaching in community colleges.
-you can explore a job opportunity with Wall Mart as a manager. Wll Mart is alway looking for the manager. I know about five people who worked as managers and left for better future.

It is not a good idea to start thinking about sueing canada , our own country, the country, people spend so mach effort and money to come to. The thought of sueing Canada will make your own life miserable, the Govt will not even feel the pinch of you sueing.

This is my opinion, it may or may not help you but it has worked for me personally.
