Hi there.
In the www.cic.gc.ca site they make a differenciation between Basic Residence and Physical Presence (http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/citizen/calculator-faq.html). The basic residence is the time you´ve been living in canada. And the physical presence is the time you´ve been physically in canada excluding day you´ve been outside of the country since you´ve been living in canada. I came to canada in july 2000, was granted refugee in july 2003 and got my permanent residence in november 2004. Since I received my PR(permanent resicence) I´ve been traveling a lot to different countries, the longest trip was 2 months. I was planning to apply or my citizenship in november 2006 because I have my basic residence time of 3 years by then (2 as a PR and 1 for the time before PR), but I dont have 3 years of physical presence and I may not have that till middle of 2007. After so many years of living in this country I am eager to become canadian and dont want to wait much longer. My question is: Should I apply in november 2006? Or should I wait till I have 3 years of physical presence? Please give me advice.
Also I heard a friend talking about once you apply for citizenship you can ask for a "temporary" canadian passport to travel even before becoming a canadian. It doesnt seem true to me. Is this possible?
All your help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading all this.

Question about time before asking for citizenship (in reply to: Question about time before asking for citizenship) Apply only after 730 days you are actually physically present in Canada, from Nov2004.
This is assuming that you completed 365 days of stay in Canada between 2002 until PR
