The 2006 Federal Budget includes a 50 percent reduction in the $975 Right of Permanent Residence Fee. The new Right of Permanent Residence Fee is $490 for immigrants who become permanent residents under all social, humanitarian and economic classes. The change is effective as of 12:00 a.m. EDT on May 3, 2006.

If you paid the Right of Permanent Residence Fee, but did not become a permanent resident until after 12:00 a.m. EDT on May 3, 2006, you are entitled to a refund

Reduction in the Right of Permanent Residence Fee (to $490) (in reply to: CIC announcement)
The legislation has not passed yet. If it does not, it seems possible that the fee will remain at $975. Immigration seeems to be jumping the gun and promising refunds now, May 3 2006. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/resid-fee/faq.html

However, they do say on their site that it will take up to 1 year for people to get a $485 refund, especially if they are not in Canada.

We received our file number in year 2005. Our agency asking ask to settle and pay now our RPRF wherein we still have to comly some of our lacking documents, is it really needed to pay then???...How about the availment of 50% reduction, are we qualified to that??? What we really need to pay fee then, the $975 or the $490??? We are just wondering why they asked us still the old fee...please help us understand.
