Do we need to hire a representative?

Subject: Do we need to hire a representative?
I was wondering if we need to hire a representative.
I hire him 4 years ago and I have to pay the total amount of $4000 upon completion. I did paid him $1,000 so far; however, it seems like he did nothing for me except sending the application to the CIC office for me which I didn´t know which location to send to exactly in the first place.
Later on, all the letter was sent to my home address directly.
Right now I just also notice that he is just an unpaid representative category.
I´m not sure when my representative will be of my help.

When will CIC contact my representative during the process?
Will my representative be able to defend for me if my application is rejected? Or Can I appeal by myself?
Are there anybody using a representative right now?
Could you please share pros and cons?
Should I cancel my representative?

Thank you so much in advance for answering my question. :-)

silverguy,

is your rep a lawyer or just an immigration consultant ?

a consultant cannot fight for you if you need to appeal - only a lawyer can do that and they will charge $$$ for that process...you can appeal yourself , just use these forums for help, advice and guidance (also check out immigration.ca forum)

cic will only contact your rep if you have authorized cic to contact him/her - there is a form you would have had to sign titled Authorization of a Representative..

i had hired a lawyer for $2000 and i ended up firing her because she made so many mistakes, provided mis-leading information and mis-guided me - so my outside spousal sponsorship which would have only taken 2 or 3 months ended up taking double the time at 6 months.

good luck!

Thank U so much Hermionnee for your response. This is really enlight me. My rep was simply just an immigration consultant. He also changed his address 3 times in the last 4 years. Right now, he just concentrates on his restaurant business. He never keep me posted on any information. I had to go through CIC site and look for useful information from this forum. I think I should cancel him as a rep.

What I am worry is during the past 5 months.
Will CIC send medical instruction to my rep address? (Earlier, CIC sent the letters, AOR and IA, to my home address.)

If CIC sent medical instruction to my rep address, can I request CIC to send medical instruction again to my home address?

silverguy, i wouldn´t recommend posting the name of your rep as that could lead to legal problems if he/she were to find out ..

if all correspondence has been sent to you so far, i believe that future correspondence would also be sent to you.

do you have a copy of your application? If so, do you see a form in there titled Authorization of a Representative or something like that ? Do you remember signing such a form?

If you never signed one, cic will not communicate with your rep. If you are worried, why not just call the cic call center and ask them if they ever got a form like that contained in your application ? Also, confirm the mailing address they have for you in their computer. Phone # is
