would be thankful if some one share the experience about this related question.
I´m applying for student visa i just got the acceptance letter from college. should I apply at the same time for open work permit for my spouse?
or i can apply for that with in canada and how long it takes to get it from with in canada?
I read some where it takes 8 weeks, does it mean a person is not allowed to work till he receive the work permit in hands?
Im applying from UAE.but consualate people know nothing about any thing their only reply is to please visit the webstie www.cic.ca

Hi Nisha,
From whatever knowledge I have, I can advise that you can only apply for open work permit for ur spouse, only if u both are in canada. Has ur spouse got visa too?
Generally it takes 21 to 45 days to get OWP..depending upon ur case..until u get OWP he / she cant work!

Hi Nisha,
in Vienna office they issued my husband an open work permit at the time of my application for study permit. I suggest you print out a work permit application and write a cover letter where you state that you wish to obtain an open work permit for your spouse on account of your student status.

Hi Nishe,
My wife also came as graduate student and I came with her. I was given an "open" working permit. If your spouse does a medical before coming to Canada then his work permit will allow him to work anywhere, even in food handling jobs. If he doesn´t do a medical, then he cannot work in jobs that may require him to handle food or other food products. My work permit was initially for 1 yr, then when I renewed it, it became co-terminus with my wife´s student visa. When she was given a renewal of 3 years then my work permit was also for 3 years.
