Are Canadians somewhat similar to the crowd here?

Canada Immigration Forum (discussion group)

Subject: Are Canadians somewhat similar to the crowd here?
I´ve not yet stayed in Canada long enough to closely observe the mentality and culture of the general public. But from what I read in this forum, people tend to participate more in discussions about bickering over bigotry and prejudice. So are Canadians really like the people here? Is the Canadian society now, that I thought is more cultured and refined than Americans, most Europeans and Asians, similar to the Canadians in this forum? I´ve seen more replies in threads about insults, foul language and intolerance than information exchange. This is just an inquiry since I´m having anxieties moving to Canada. Well, what do you guys think? Is Canada all worth it for you?

Yeah you got that right Boloxis, that actitud is probably a result of the anxiety and frustration of the immigration process itself, is not right tough. I´d rather shut up and let others provide some positive feedback if I didn´t have anything good to say. But it´s just me.
I find that canadians are getting used to the idea of sharing the country with the newcomers and most of them are welcoming us, after all Canada is an immigrant´s country, is just that some of us came way earlier than others (include myself in the second group of course).
That´s what I think anyways.

I´m not sure you can stereotype an entire nation - ANY nation. Of course there are intolerant frustrated people in every nation, but a forum for wannabe immigrants is hardly indicative of the people of that particular country.

As a native Canadian, I can say I´m very accepting of immigrants. I have friends of many different race, religion, and culture. I treat people with the same respect I receive from them. I embrace other cultures, I enjoy eating in ethnic restaurants (Indian being my favourite!), I enjoy reading and hearing about other cultures and customs.

That said, I can tell you from experience, that racism and prejudice swings both ways. There are SOME immigrants who have no respect for Canadians, and view us as idiots with no intelligence, individuality or culture, and feel they´re doing us a favour by coming here. It is that group of people I have NO tolerance for, whatsoever.

There are some who feel they have the right to do or say whatever they want about Canadians, criticize, condemn, insult. But the minute we respond in defence, the racism card is brouht out.

For me, it´s all about attitude, and how others interact with us in our society. I think you´ll find most Canadians share this mindset.

So, before you say we are intolerant, unaccepting, racist or prejudiced, look first at how we´re being regarded.

And I´d just like to add, regarding the "crowd here", take a look around. Read the posts. Observe how ´some´ immigrants respond to others´ posts. I´ve been visiting this forum for over a year, and I don´t post often. A lot of the comments are rude, offensive, insulting and vulgar. I can assure you these posts are not being made by "Canadians".

If we choose to respond to the said rude, offensive, insulting and vulgar posts made by others, and if by doing that, you choose to label us ´racist´, then there isn´t much I can do or say to change your opinion.

Thanks a lot to all of you guys giving me a better picture, I´ve expected the sad truth though, so the root is still color, people tend to label themselves different from the whole population in Canada. As you´ve noticed I never said nor meant anything about who is of what color or who has been there first, I just meant Canadians now, a nation of mixed race, and Canadians are fighting amongst themselves because of their root color. That is supposing the immigrants that became citizens are also called Canadians too as I´ve thought, right? So it is true, its like putting different species of fish in an aquarium, they never re-populate, even if they belong to the same family of species because they´d eat the others´ eggs.

I also think this forum is one of the best channels to observe the true character of people, where nobody can personally know you, the inner self often reveals since they´ve got nothing to lose but not concerned if they hurt others. What is wrong with people?

For my two cents worth... The Canadians are basically the immigrants who migrate and then end up staying there...

So basically we are looking at newer generation and may be one or two generations of the people whi have migrated to Canada...

You can understand and expect how they will be

Boloxis - the problem we have here is that it is hard to determine who are the long time Canadians (there are not that many of us); the newer Canadians (those that have lived in Canada 5 years or less) and the Immigration Applicants (after all... this is an immigration website so why would anyone else hang around here).

The longer you live in Canada the more pressure there is to become tolerant and colour blind. In some ways we have become so politically correct that it is becoming a joke.

From my observations, the people who struggle most around this forum are those who bring life-long attitudes with them about other cultures and religions. Partly because they have not had them as neighbours or friends and do not realize that they are the same as anyone else. They have also felt no social pressure to adjust their attitudes.

I can honestly say that colour and nationality don´t matter to me. I would say that is true for the majority of my friends, family and collegues. The only time I tend to push back is when I am expected to treat someone ´special´ because they are of a different ethnic background. Nothing makes me more crazy than when the race card gets brought out any time someone does not like how they are being treated. It may have nothing to do with race - it might simply be because that person is wrong or has broken the law!!!!

I also tend to push back when the Canadian way of life (which is created by immigrants from all over the world) is slammed by the very people who want to move to Canada.

I have been around this forum for over 2 years. (OMG) My observations are that the intolerance is the most evident amongst those still waiting to call Canada home. It alarms me. It makes me nervous for the community that I live in. I am a racial minority-but who cares! We all get along here and I don´t want that to change. If people can´t do that... I would rather they not live in my country - I don´t care what colour or culture they are.

Good point (in reply to: Are Canadians somewhat similar to the crowd here?)
Canada is the real land of opportunity. As a recent immigrant my advice to all the new immigrant to abandon the bad thoughts. Canadians are great people. I have lived in Africa, Europe and the united states and this is by far the best place to be. The weather is cold by the hearts are warm. I love it!
Welcome to canada but make sure you respect others because others will definately respect you.
Regards,
