Subject: Immigration Quandary
Both myself and my common law partner are roughly one year into the immigration process having applied for permanent residence in March 2005. At the moment we are saving money, trying to cut our overheads, renting a house rather than buying etc all because we really are focused on moving away from the UK. Waiting is agony particularly as we?re not that happy in our jobs or where we live.

However, we have now both been given the opportunity to go to New Zealand in August/September where we will probably be combining work and travel for about six months. We?re really keen to go but I am very much concerned about how this could impact on our immigration application for Canada. Given that only something like 30% of immigration cases are completed in 24 months it is more than likely we could well be back in the UK before receiving any notification, and of course there is always the chance we will not be approved at all. I?m reluctant to give up the NZ opportunity but of the two countries Canada is really where we want to be permanently

I would be extremely grateful if anyone has any helpful thoughts, suggestions about whether going to NZ would scupper our chances. Anything to help me make my mind up!! :-) :-)

As I sa in Lord of the Rings ... I think NZ is nice .. hehehe .....

Kidding aside ... My previous boss lives there .... went here to the U.S. ... but got pregnant and still wanted her 3rd child to be a NZ citizen ...

Medicals are good .. she did not pay for hospital .. but paid for Doctor´s Fee ... and she had a nurse/doula with her for a month .. for free ..

Jobs .. Medical field, Nursing, Teaching are all good fields there ... lots of high paying jobs ... IT ... it´s case to case .... and all other profession ... is ok .. as long as you are an Immigrant upon entering ...

But Canada is almost the same .... so I don´t know ... hehhe ..

You haven´t stated how you´re here. Is your partner Canadian and sponsoring you (if so, inland at Vegreville or outside in London?)? Or are you here under a work permit and applying for a skilled worker PR visa in London?

If it´s the former, I´m almost in the same situation - from the UK, applied Jan 2005 and still waiting, saving money (trying to!) and getting frustrated, not v. happy with where we live or what we do. I don´t know where you got your statistics from but the sponsorship case they´re wrong. Technically a very high (can´t say exactly what) % are supposed to be done in 12 months, almost all by 18 (you can contact CIC after this time to ask why it is taking so long). You really shouldn´t leave the country while this is going on so New Zealand is a definite no-go. Do you have approval in principle?

If it´s the skilled worker case, though, go ahead and travel. You´re allowed to leave the country but you could only come back before you get PR as a visitor. It sounds to me like this is what you meant. I can´t see why it would scupper your chances to go to NZ, other than if you really intend Canada to be your final destination, employers won´t regard NZ experience as valuable. Staying and working in Canada would definitely be good for your CV. It depends also on what jobs you do - are you absolutely certain you can make it in Canada? There is a lot of discrimination in Canada even towards people with e.g. UK degrees and experience. From what I´ve heard, you might be much better received permanently in New Zealand.

I´m a bit confused as to exactly what you meant (as long as you´ve got the points and no medical/conviction history, they can´t deny you PR) but hope this helps.

The only catch I can see in this case is that you would have to notify CIC of your temporary relocation to NZ since you guys would be there for 6 months. This would also mean that you would eventually have to obtain police clearance from NZ to submit to CIC. You could probably get away with it if you were staying say 5 months? I personally think you should not loose your NZ opportunity. It is another experience, and you might even like it there. You could always ask a trusted friend or family member to collect your mail in the UK, and scan for any updates/letters from CIC while your gone. It shouldn´t be a big deal.
