Subject: Medical for work permit
I applied for work permit as I got a job offer in Canada. My PR is in process. I just got a letter from detroit and they asked for medical for work permit.(not for PR, as they have not even sent IA yet)
Do you guys know how long will it delay my work permit application? How long does it usually take for them to go through the medical after it is sent?

The medical will be sent to Ottawa but my work permit application is in detroit. How do they communicate?

I am desperate because I am graduating and I can not stay in the US for a long time.

Please help.

It can take up to three months. Usually one. When you go to a designated practitioner (CIC doctor) tell him you are willing to pay extra fee to send your documents to Ottawa by express mail. Ask his secretary to let you know the tracking number of the letter.

People in Ottawa process your meds and upload the information into the system, so that it will be available for the CIC office abroad.

Another scenario (i am not sure if it can work):

apply for a visitor visa. You will be admitted in Canada for 6 months. Maybe your employer will be willing to allow you to start working and will pay you later retrospectively. When your work visa is ready you will send your passport to Detroit and they stamp the visa. You will be also required to go to the closest Canadian border to leave Canada as a visitor and come back as a worker. You will not need to enter the US for that.

We did medicals for work permit in June and recieved work permit in the begining of August. But we sent medicals to London. Because applied in Europe. The sent results back through e-mail to the embassy. Another good thing about work permit is that you can call Embassy and require information about status of your application. It was our case a couple of years ago. And we didn´t spend much nerves during this process.
But I heared that in USA it is almost the same. And usually employer in Canada can wait a couple of months. Don´t worry too much.
