Any help would be monumentaly appreciated.

I´m a United States resident, lived my entire life in Connecticut. I´ve been visiting Canada for 6 years now, and I´ve had 2 very good relationships with people up there, most of my friends are also Canadian residents. My current relationship has gotten very serious, and we are thinking of ways for me to immigrate and even about having kids. As easy as this may seem, there are some complications that make this more difficult than it may seem. First off she´s married and the three of us are in a polyamorous relationship. Unfortunatly, that pretty much kills our ability for family sponsorship. I know it´s weird, but it works for us...

I´ve taken the eligibility test for the perminant residence skilled worker visa and I barely make it but I pass. Specifics about me that apply to my immigration follow:

- I am 24 years old
- I have a Bachelors of Science in Computer Science from Franklin Pierce College
- I have 2 years full-time experience as a webmaster/coder/graphic design guy
- I have 4 years part-time experience previous to that doing computer network maintence at my school.
- I have my own reliable vehicle
- I can speak and read basic French and am very well versed in English
- I have no known relatives in Canada, although about 4 generations back I know we immigrated to the states from Newfoundland

If I am able to move to canada and look for work, I have a guarenteed apartment to live in at Kitchener, Ontario for as long as I want and need to get on my feet. These folks are willing to sponsor me if thats possible and doesnt cost too much money.

Unfortunatly for me, and the main reason I´m asking questions here, is that I have no means to save up the required $10,000 in the immediate future unless I get luck and hit the lottery. Car payments, rent payments, and the like are killing me. I also dont have a passport, I travel to Canada with my drivers liscence and birth certificate.

So I suppose my questions are:

Is a passport required before applying for perminant residence?

Is there ANY way around the 10,000 dollar requirement for applying for residence due to te fact that I have guarenteed room and board for as long as I need?

If my girlfriend gets pregnant and has a child by me, will that help or hinder or just not effect the immigration case?

Any other helpful information you could give me?

I think if you´re from the US, any form of formal ID is required. It doesn´t cost much to get a passport so why don´t you go through the CIC´s website and see what they ask for (www.cic.gc.ca)

No, there is no way around the $10,000. Processing at Buffalo is currently taking more than 2 years so you have time to start saving!

If she gets pregnant, no, it won´t help your case. You have 2 options:

1) apply as a skilled worker (takes a few years, not sure you would have enough points)
2) get married to one girlfriend and get her to sponsor you as a spouse (takes about 5-10 months, you can apply outside Canada or within, but in the latter case, you can´t work). Disadvantage: you´d have to lie about your relationship and not mention the polyamorous part.

You can´t apply as common-law because you haven´t lived together the required 12 months and there´s no way you can just stay in Canada on a visitor´s visa that long to meet the time conditions.

Bonjour jeffreydean,

Sounds as though you have an interesting relationship there.

It sounds as though you would qualify for permanent residence aside from the required funds. I believe you do need a passport to apply though. You can visit Canada for up to 6 months, I believe, without any sort of permit, but you can´t work. If you were able to find a job in IT, you should probably be able to get a temporary work permit under NAFTA and work at that job while applying for permanent residence. If the employer is willing to keep you on after you´ve immigrated and you can get a letter to that effect, the funds requirement is waived. I think, but I´m not certain, that in order to offer you arranged employment, the employer has to go through HRSDC. They don´t for a temporary job, because of NAFTA, but I believe they do in order to offer you a permanent position.

Hope this helps!
Michael

You need to show the required funds when you apply.

Get a passport.

Do whatever the immigration instructions say. I am not sure about Ontario, but some provinces have a nominee program that can speed things up if you qualify.

"Processing at Buffalo is currently taking more than 2 years so you have time to start saving! "

I was under the impression that I had to have proof of funds at the beginning of the processing, was I incorrect? Otherwise I´ll apply right now and start saving. In 2 years i could likely save that much. I may just have to sell my car for most of the funds, but I´d really rather not do that.

"get married to one girlfriend and get her to sponsor you as a spouse (takes about 5-10 months, you can apply outside Canada or within, but in the latter case, you can?t work)"

Only 5-10 months? Maybe I´ll be able to swing that because 10 months would be ideal for my current living situation... So applying outside canada would allow me to work but not if I apply inside canada? Thats strange.. What place would you reccomend I apply for a fastest processing time?

"If the employer is willing to keep you on after you?ve immigrated and you can get a letter to that effect, the funds requirement is waived."

I´ve been working very hard to find employment, trust me, but it seems like companies would rather not go through the hassle to get someone at my level of experience. They´d hire me if I lived there, but the HRSDC involvement really makes them balk.

"Get a passport. "

OK.

Thanks everybody! Im more than willing to listen to any more words of wisdom if anything else comes to you!

Go to CIC´s website and check out ´family sponsorship´. get a passport, apply to Buffalo and let us know how you get on in 5-10 months´ time!
