Subject: What can Stephen Harper do for you ?
As a prospective immigrant I wanted to ask you guys (who are already in Canada or have enough knowlegde abt the Canadians) if you think there might be major changes to the Canadian economy in the near future, after all the Govt would have changed after 13 long years.... any comments ?

don´t sweat it. if anything... a conservative government will tax you less and regulate you less. That is their style. If you live outside of Ontario and Quebec, a Conservative government will give your region more attention (Liberals only know about Ontario - in my humble opinion)

promises to prospective immigrants have been similar. If the Conservatives get elected they might actually do something about it instead of talk about it for 12 years.

A more traditional approach to law and order will likely be seen with a conservative government - more money for police and tougher sentences for repeat offenders.

I guess you can tell how I voted this afternoon. If the conservatives win and do not perform... you can be sure that the Canadian electorate will throw them out of power so fast you will not have time to say Jack Layton.

Hiren... what piece of Liberal propaganda have you been reading? I do not see any different in attitude or policy that would support what you are saying, and trust me... I have read their platforms from one end to the other. As a Canadian waiting for my guy, I am very interested in who will best care for our PR´s and PR applicants.

You all complain bitterly about your waits, the system, how immigrants are driving taxi... who would you suggest is responsible? The Liberals have been in power for 12 years - it is their policies and system that you are living with. If the Liberals are so great for immigrants - you need to stop complaining about your CIC situations.

In my mind, what could be worse than what you already have?

Yep, you can thank the Liberals for the current state of our immigration system - a big mess! It needs a major overhaul.. and if the Liberals haven´t done it by now, I wouldn´t be holding your breath.

The Conservative party, on the other hand...

I hate Conservatives.... (in reply to: What can Stephen Harper do for you ?)
As a new immigrant I can tell you that there are no many political choices in this country: First of all You get the crooked liberals, second of all the Conservatives who are way too far right wing!!!!
My vote will go for the NDPs when I become a canadian citizen, but for many canadians there are just two choices:
Conservatives or Liberals. Can anybody explain me why are you guys so narrow- minded???

given that all 3 parties are left of our neighbours to the south... I find your comments amusing.

I cannot fiancially afford the NDP platform. Their fiscal track record on a provincial level is terrible. I live in a province where the word Fast Ferries speaks volumes.

I want to have knee surgery sometime in the next 18 months and I really do not care who does the surgery - I only care that my Canada health plan covers it.

I am a fiscal conservative and a social democrat. I can be a social democrat without the government´s assistance - but I can´t force my government to spend MY money carefully - therefore... I vote accordingly.

While I think a *minority* Conservative government is the best choice for the country right now, you will excuse me for not being as effusive of Harper.

Let me tell you why.

My worry is whether Harper´s shift to the left in this election campaign, basically moving closer to traditional Liberal territory, is genuine policy or a facade to be maintained until the Tories win power.

My worry is Harper´s refusal to clarify his stand on an important issue like abortion (sorry, but saying "It´s too complex to explain" insults my intelligence).

My worry is about his unexplained about-turn on Iraq (he now claims he never supported sending Canadian troops to back Bush´s war, despite documented evidence to the contrary).

My worry is how he plans to tackle the courts if MPs strike down same-sex marriages.

My worry is that he might become a Bush lackey, without even the moral standing of a Tony Blair.

My worry is that Canada will come off second best in disputes like the one over lumber, where the international courts have already ruled against the US.

For all that, I am willing to give Harper a chance to prove all my fears wrong. The Liberals, despite their many failings, have given the country a strong economy but now have run out of steam. It´s time for some fresh thinking, and who knows, Harper may just be able to provide that.

My only prayer is that Canadians tonight have given him the keys with a L plate on it in the form of a minority government rather than let him zoom off alone without supervision.

now Typo... you have read my postings for months now. do you think I would let Harper get away with something like what you suggest.

I will be standing in Ottawa with a Bazooka if Canada goes in the direction you suggest. I think Chelle would join me.

Let´s hope more than one party loves this country.

something to think about

regardless of what happens tonight...
Canada will have elected a new government without a shot being fired. not only that- we know without a doubt in 5 years or less, we will get to choose again.

What is that worth to you?

it is worth a lot to me. O Canada!
