Subject: If Harper wins the elections, what happens to us?
Its pretty clear he is against some minority groups and he wants to change the law to the way it was before. So my question is; what would happen to our application that is still pending? (a binational common law relationship from the US), although we are just waiting for our application to be finalized. Can he just crushed our life´s and destroy all the effort we have put into moving there? thx.

EVERYTHING remains the same. Nothing changes unless news laws are enacted and that takes a long time.

WCR: there is no factual basis for your following statement ´Its pretty clear he is against some minority groups and he wants to change the law to the way it was before.´

Every immigration policy statement I have heard in the last 4 weeks has been positive news for all PR applicants- from every political party. So please, let Canada do its thing and find a new leader and hopefully we can all go peacefully back to our endless waiting without incident.

Sharon: with all my respect let me bring into your attention that, we can not underestimate the fact that he clearly stated that he will go back and recount every vote in parliament regarding an issue that has been settle already (gay marriage to be clear) and my intentions are not to shake everyones ground by asking my regard. we, my partner and I, are in the same situation as all of us here...
maybe I wasn´t clear enough with my question. But all I would like to know is if he is after turning gay marriage back to traditional marriage, would he take away all the rights as well? I mean immigration rights for gay binational couples?thx

Sharon,

The factual basis behind WCR´s comment is the fact that Stephen Harper has been directly quoted as calling immigrants ´garbage´, hence all the worrying on these posts. The current news on immigration policy is moot since it is election time and Harper, Martin, and Layton would sell their mothers to get elected. The reason they stated that they would decrease the ROLF fee is because they were in ethnic neighborhoods and felt it would go over well with the immigrants residing there. It has been acknowledged that the Conservatives have made anti-immigrant claims on their website and in their previous policy statement. However, I don´t think that immigration laws will be changed overnight if Harper is elected. If there is any change, it won´t occur for at least another year or so.

Well you should care who wins, because we are talking about the leadership of the country we are longing to live at; and you also should know they won´t change the rules you applied with, if they change something it will be in the long term, and it will only affect the people applying after they enact the new law, so we all, should be relaxed.
A year and a half ago, or so, when i was planning to go to Canada, I received an email from a law firm, stating that there were going to be elections in Canada and they strongly suggested that I should apply inmediately, before the law changed (especifically the point system); I don´t know how many ate that, but this was clearly a commercial strategy of that law firm to get more clients, and some how there?s the gossip around about changes that might affect us, and I strongly suggest don´t eat that, any change doesn´t come that fast.
Remember 9/11 we the US had to do a lot of changes and even though they did it over night, it took almost a year for it to be in effect, and these were security measures of vital importance!
Any one heard about the US building a wall in its southern border? well that issue it´s been around for over a year now, and it hasn´t been enacted yet! and after enacting it, they have to write the exact rules of how to enforce that law!
So please sit relaxed, even those people plannig to apply in the following months, won´t have problems at all.

Regards

WCR, nobody has even suggested taking away the rights of same sex couples. They are disputing the vote that was taken in the House around the definition of ´marriage´ not the right for same sex couples to form a legal contract in the same way every other couple does in the province where they live. The only thing being questioned is what to call it. You can get all worked up about it, or you can realize that society sometimes needs the opportunity to adjust.

I do not consider that recounting EVERY vote that has been taken in the house of commons.

as for your ´garbage´ comment, I am still looking for an exact quote and the context. Did you see that on a Liberal website?

Remember, all politics right now is selective propaganda. I care more how the country is going to be run on Jan. 25. Immigration rules are only part of what should concern you. How you will be taxed, looked after, and treated should also be a huge consideration because they all affect your ability to success here.
