Subject: UK to Canada spouse sponsorship
Hi! I am interested in hearing from other Canadians who have sponsored a spouse coming from the United Kingdom. I had read on the canada immigration website that they have made some changes for spouse sponsorship to try to speed matters along, possibly taking as little as three months. If everything is in order, has anyone actually had it approved in that short of time? What are your experiences with this? I realise that is a very general question but I am curious about the reality of what goes on for when we need to make this move. Is it better to get married in Canada and then have the spouse go back to the UK and start filing everything? If all is in order, what are the chances of them being able to apply for work as soon as they arrive back in canada? I have heard so many different stories and am hoping to find out some information to use in the future. Thanks!

His case seems to be taking a while.

If you do apply for out of Canada sponsorship (your spouse stays in UK), once everything works out, then yes, he/she will be able to work as soon as he/she arrives in Canada and gets SIN. I have heard that it´s faster to apply from out of Canada than in Canada. But if your spouse can get a work Visa while waiting for the sponsorship application to be approved, that could also work.

thanks yes a friend of mine in alberta met and married a british guy and he moved here right away (cant remember how) and he was not able to get a work permit for an entire year. it was all a big mess but this would have been about 5 years ago. supposedly things have changed, but so far i have heard its best to get married, save everything you can to prove its a real marriage, and then wait for approval before having them move here.

i *think* my friends husband stayed on a 6 month visa and got it extended for another 6 months while awaiting immigration to come through, but he was not able to work at all. it was very difficult for them.

thanks for that link too kenny. i think that when the time comes, at least some of this stuff will be easier to sort through. my bf has lived in the same town in england since he was born, held the same job with the same company for 18 years and has an excellent work record, a couple side jobs but easy enough to check up on as they were security jobs,, etc. just want to get a feel for everything so its not such a shock when the time comes to apply haha

also... (in reply to: UK to Canada spouse sponsorship)
... i have noticed some people in various forums talking about how you may not be able to sponsor a spouse if you have received welfare from the canadian govt. is this true? i tried to find more extensive information at the govt website but there is so much to look through. i have not received actual welfare before or unemployment, but i am a single parent and do receive some aide such as daycare and housing subsidy. would this interfere perhaps? such as, at the moment im in single parent housing. i cannot have another adult living here unless they are a dependant. would i have to move to a non-subsidized home before our application would be approved? that is what i am understanding from the information i have read but was unsure if this has happened to anyone else? thanks!

Kezza,
First, yes it is very important that you keep documentation about your relationship - lots of pictures, phone bills, emails, etc. From what I´ve learned, more is better!
I don´t think that housing or daycare subsidies count as receiving assistance, but I think you should call CIC and ask them directly just to make sure. About your housing situation, write a letter to them explaining that you have the intention of moving once your spouse is preparing to come to Canada. To get the initial approval from CIC in Canada, there are only basic requirements, so I wouldn´t worry about this stage. But once your application goes to your specific Visa Office, they may be looking at other things such as your housing situation.
Just be completely honest, write a letter explaining your situation. The more upfront you are with them the better.

I looked on CIC´s website and it says in the sponsorship guide that a person is NOT eligible to sponsor if they are receiving social assistance other than disability... Now I don´t know where you fit in...I do know that student loans don´t count as social assistance, but I don´t know about housing or daycare...

Did you check out their guide to sponsorship?
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/applications/fc.html#sponsor

I´ve already submitted my application to sponsor my spouse and I´m waiting for his Visa office to contact him for an interview. It´s all overwhelming at first, but if you fill everything out carefully and supply tons of evidence, things will go well.

CIC´s phone number:
From anywhere in Canada, call 1-888-242-2100 (toll-free)
