Subject: Proficiency in English
I have applied for canadian permanent residency. I currently work as a postdoc and a lecturer in a University in USA.
I recieved a letter from the consulate saying that I need to provide proof of language ability in English, by taking IELTS.

Going by the fact that I have a bunch of scientific publications in International Journals written in English, and work experience in India, London and now in US and then the teaching experience - having to take IELTS seems kind of absurd. I did write to the Immigration center, justifying my proficiency, but they do not seem to accept my explaination.

Any ideas? Do I have to take the TEST??

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

can you live with less points if they do not give you fill credit for english?

your consultant is obligated to advise you of the request. It does see rather odd.

You have only 2 choices. live with the points they assign you or force them to accept the clear findings of IELTS.

good luck.

As Sharon, except to clarify that sure, you have a postdoc from a US University, but so do a lot of other people whose mothertongue isn´t English and their English still sucks because entrance requirements vary so much from university to university, even for PhD and above. They probably asked for proof because your high school education wasn´t in English (I´m assuming) and this is the age at which English language skills are really cemented. So if you don´t need the points and aren´t worried about th passmark rising, don´t do it, and if you think ´I´ve got nothing to hide and the proof can only help´, do it. :-)

The CIC asking for IELTS tests does not mean that they do not recognise your english capabilities. It might be more time saving for you to just go, do the IELTS than trying to convince them that you dont need an english test. For them its just a requirement, so go ahead and take the test.

All the best.

The officer that handles a person´s file has a final say on the requirements and therefore make a decision based on his/her PERSONAL intuition. While ´officer A´ will see a cup of water as half emptied another ´officer B´ may see same as half full.

A lot of people were never asked for IELTS or TEF(French test) or even additional documents. So all depends on the type of officer!

Hi Mate
Well I do work in Asia and had all me primary and secondary education in thai, got a diploma from Cambridge Uni and Masters from an Australian University and I didnt sit in an IELTS exam, and justified my reason for not taking it by sending them my transcripts, so far they seem to be satisfied and they have not asked me to sit in IELTS. Seems those in CIC (in that part of the world ) are not satisfied with yours.. Well just sit in the exam and I guess it must be just a piece of cake for you, ...sometimes if they require something from you it is waste of time trying to change their decision...

Good luck

like I said... it all depends how confident you are with your overall point score. if you have 12 to spare... then losing 4 or 8 is something you may want to risk.

IELTS is a pain... but if you want to insure the application gets full approval- it might be a pain work enduring.
