Subject: IELTS: Anyone who took it already?
  Hi All,

I got the request for sending IELTS results. Going through some IELTS stuff in the net, I have a couple of questions on the listening part of the test. How long will they play the tape? Also, will I have the option to replay the tape? I am not worried about whether or not I will be able to listen properly, but that I may not remember the numbers and other facts in the speech.

Any help is hugely appreciated.

Thanks much,
Hari

Dear harry,
Ielts listening test would be for 30 minutes and u will be given 40 questions to Answer. The tape will be played only once. you have to be very attentive to listen and answer all the questions.
for this I suggest you to get the Cambridge book 1, 2, 3 for the Practice with these books you will get the 6 cassettes.
Harry, I have little question, Have you submitted your application without Ielts results to cic? or did you mentioned you are going to send the result later on.
Wish you very good luck

Thanks Nimra.

I applied without IELTS. AOR was Mar ´05. Last week I got a letter dated Nov 29 asking for IELTS scores.

Take the IELTS listening very seriously since the tape will be played only once and you have to keep answerinf while listening.

Ask for IELTS sample and follow the instructions religiously to score high.

Well I have not taken the IELTS but given that test several times, please prepare yourself through Cambridge IELTS books- listening- and before they start the recorder, pay attention to the questions and try to guess what kind of words are expected to fill in the blanks or analyse the questions carefully, ...Doing a lot of listening exercises, listening to questions and trying to answer them no matter it is an IELTS test or not will make your ears ready for such listening tests, and of course as a final step listen as many as IELTS listening sample exercises...Good luck

Hi Harry,
Before you go off and buy a bunch of expensive IELTS books and what not, I wanted to let you know that, if you´re fluent in speaking English, you do not need to worry. If you´ve been speaking for a long time and your grammar is fairly well, you will definitely get 7 in all 4 sections. I got my AOR in Mar and got an IELTS request in Aug 2005. Took the exam and sent in the results by November 2005. Anyways, hope this will help. There are a lot of online sample exams. They are very similar to the actual exam, so go over those. Hope this helps.

Be careful about the listening part. It more about paying attention and quick thinking rather than your actual listening skill. Practice is very important for listening test.

Expect to mess up few questions during exam. I mean you need to stay cool and continue. you can still get a 7 even if you miss 4/5 questions.

I would still say Reading is the toughest of
all the four sections.
