Subject: Medical Insurance for Pregnant Wife
  Hello,
I am entering Toronto in January 2006 with an immigration visa with my wife. According to the rule in Ontario we have to wait for 3 months for health insurance and in the meantime the private health insurance can be purchased. We are expecting a child untill 25 April 2006. The private health insurance doesnot cover the pregnancy as I have already read about it on the internet. As the time of delivery might be flexible therefore if it happens before the health insurance covergae of my wife then how can we get the child? Do we need to pay a lot or is there any community help in this regard as someboday has mentioned on this forum that you need to pay 10K without health insuirance to have a baby. As we are new immigrants therefore it will not be possible for us to spend thousands of dollars so fastly. I am eager to know about this matter in detail.

I think it should be ok, public hospital won´t refuse you to see doctors I guess. This is not U.S.

if you don´t get cover yet, they still have to accept you, no matter what. at last you might get a bill for that, just don´t pay that. you are legal resident, they can´t do nothing to you.

hey, this is perfect election healthcare critic topics for NDP! If they force you to pay that, sell your story to media.

I know I am a bad boy

You might try checking alternative delivery options such as mid-wife or birthing centers they might be cheaper than giving birth in the hospital. If arrive in Ontario in early Janauary and you wife is due April 26th, you medical should be okay. I would suggest that you try to arrive as soon a possible in January just in case you wife goes into labour two weeks before her due date, which is not uncommon. She can also be two weeks late.....but I guess you are just exploring your options.

I was in the same situation. Dont do like Departure Bay´s advice. You allaways are responsibe for your own bill for whatever reason. There are no company sale health insurance for pragnancy because in case a woman have C section, it will be lot of money (appro. 150000-20000 CAN)

My sugestion is you sould entrance Canada asap, and donot land in Toronto, try other province (such as Newfoundland and Labrador, and it take only few minutes to get your health card). After get this health card, if you move to Toronto, It will take only 3months (calculating by calendar not by 90 days) to get your new health card.
ofcause move from one to other province will take some money also.
Hope this helps. Good luck to all your family.

Hello Hale,
I have got this information from the following web site.
http://www.health.gov.on.ca/english/public/pub/ohip/wait.html

If you move to Ontario from another province or territory where you had provincial/territorial health coverage :

If you move to Ontario directly from another province and apply for coverage, your OHIP coverage will begin on the first day of the third month after establishing residency, provided you were insured in your previous province or territory.

Your valid health card from your former province will continue to provide you with health care coverage during this three-month waiting period.

On the confirmation of permanent residence papers Toronto is mentioned as I declared it while applying for immigration. If I want to land some where else then should I inform to embassy about it? The ticket is almost booked for Toronto but I should change it because of the expected problem of health coverage. By the way I will reach on 13 January 2006 and untill 14 April she will get her insurance but if the delivery is premature then we will be in a very big trouble. Really cant decide too much confused

Is it possible for the two of you to land say in the next few days so that you can activate your medical coverage ?
You can return soon after that to settle things back home. I know this will cost you a lot, but still cheaper than having to pay for the delivery and after care. What if there is a complication and costs a lotmore than 10k?. I will try not take that risk.

I am in the early 2006 group. My wife is also pregnant with a due date about the same as your wife´s. Pl e-mail me at tmyapa01@uncfsu.edu if you can. I like to keep in touch with you to discuss how to handle this issue. I hope to do my research about my options begining next week.

The new rule in Ontario, you have to wait or resident for 153 days during the first 6 months period in order to get OHIP coverage. Please check the OHIP website again.

Hi Shinewine,

I´m in the same phase as that of you, having the delivery date as April 11, 2008. So, how did you manage the delivery/health insurance in toronto, which is the port of entry for me too? Please let me know ASAP. I´m also planning to land in the first week of Jan07.

Regards,
Gautam
