Subject: detailed list of personal and household items
My wife is going to Canada soon so as not to have her permanent residency expire (it was just approved but expires very soon) and they are asking her/us to submit a detailed list of personal and household items that are accompanying us and/or will arrive later.
As my wife is only staying for a few days (her visit is just to not lose the PR) and we don´t intend to live in Canada for a couple of years yet (work stuff in Asia), do we still need to submit the detailed list, especially as we will probably buy a new computer and a few kitchen appliances next year?
Cheers everyone.

I would do exactly what they tell you. And please note, to keep your PR active you must live in canada 2 out of 3 years. the exact 730 days otherwise your PR will be void.

Mach,

No you do not need to bring the list of items with you when you land, as long as you are not moving at that time. In March, my husband did the landing procedure while visiting my parents. They immigration people ask you why you are coming and we said to activate the visa. When you are done with process, you must pass through customs. They will ask you if you have anything to follow at this time. We said no as we are not moving at the moment. The lady said ok and we were allowed through with no problems. However, when you come to live here permanently and have goods that will follow later (eg. in a few weeks by ship), just must tell them at customs and then there is paperwork that you must fill out and go through with a customs person. But when you make the official "landing" you do not need to have a list with you. I hope this helps.

Please note that it is 2 years (730 days) out of every 5 years that you must be a resident in Canada to maintain your status.

You should bring a list of goods when you land, even if they are not following you at that time. Please view the following link about settling in Canada.

Ouch, starchief, that´s bad advice. The goods to follow list must be presented when making your entry as a PR and pertains to "personal and household effects free of duties if you owned, possessed, and used them before you arrived in Canada" (Canada Border Services Agency).

Note that it does not say items you plan to buy in future, but stuff you already own and use.

It´s true that sometimes customs officials will be fairly forgiving about providing a list when you make your "real" landing, but that´s because they are following the spirit, rather than the letter of the law. Whether you want to take the chance that you will get an understanding customs officer is up to you.

If I were you, I´d decide (at the very least) what make and model of computer and kitchen applicances I´d be buying in the next year and add that to the Goods to Follow list. It may not have a serial number for the items, but at least you have something to prove they were on your list.

Thanks (in reply to: detailed list of personal and household items)
Thanks all.
I will make a list to follow, just in case my wife must present it. I will of course put the things I already know we have and are bringing, and then I will add things I am pretty sure we will buy in future.
Cheers

typo,

Well like everyone who is landing, we wondered if we should bring a list or not. At the time we had no idea of what we would bringing and most stuff we would throw out. I guess the difference for us was that we came on holidays for 2 weeks and at the same time activated the visa. The customs officers didn´t ask for any sheets nor did the immigration officers who activated the visa. I guess in the end each case is different from start to finish. We returned home after our holidays and 5 months later we made the official move and at that time we presented the list as made out by our moving company. But one thing to remember, serial numbers for electronics are very important. When meeting with the customers officer, he will write down all the serial numbers for computers/monitors etc. so you better make sure that you have the exact number written down. The information I gave was based on our experience so you can do what you want with the information. All the best!
